Del Mar Lifeguard Department Hall of Fame

 
 

In 2012, the Del Mar Lifeguard Department established a Hall of Fame.
Recipients are Del Mar Lifeguards who contributed greatly to the department.

 
     
 

 

Gardner Stevens

Gardner was the first Del Mar Lifeguard Captain
and ran the department from 1965 until 1982.
He passed away in 2002, at the age of 76. Read history here.

Grant Larson

Grant started as a lifeguard with the department in 1966,
He went on to become Captain in 1982
and retired in 1998. Read history here

Jim "Kimo" Lischer

Jim was hired as a lifeguard in 1972.
He worked his way up to Sergent
and retired in 2011 after 40 years
of lifeguarding at Del Mar. Read history here.

Jack Ross

Jack was one of the first
City of Del Mar Lifeguards, hired when the
department started in 1965.
He spent six years as second in charge and
another six as a seasonal lifeguard II.
He retired from lifeguarding in 1985.

Brett Mattei

Brett was hired as a seasonal lifeguard in 1979.
He was promoted to lieutenant in 1993 . The leadership,
communication and crisis management skills he learned from
his lifeguard mentors led directly to his achievements as a lifeguard
and later as an American diplomat .

Jason Rubio

In 1988, Jason started with the Del Mar Lifeguards
as a Beach Aide and in 1990 was promoted to Lifeguard I.
He eventually became a Seasonal Lifeguard II where he was
a Supervisor during the busy summer months.
During the Winter months Jason was also
an Enforcement Officer. Jason devoted 17 years of service
to the Del Mar Lifeguard and Community Services Department.
